Scores of orphaned children live in southern Sudan, one of Africa's harshest places.
In a compound outside of Yei, lives are being changed and hope is being realized through the love of Jesus Christ at Harvesters
Orphanage and School. Harvesters is in the process of building a
second campus in South Sudan, and is exploring a third site for
development.
New Directions International has been working directly with a re-patriated Sudanese agricultural
expert to develop an agricultural training center in Sudan called Eden Keepers Farm. TFSW
is working with Eden Keepers to see that the
training center is completed, funded, and fully operational to serve
the needs of South Sudan by providing knowledge and produce that will
combat the extreme poverty in the region.
Since the beginning of
Sudan's civil war in 1983, the people of southern Sudan
have been denied an education. As a result, southern
Sudan has one of the lowest literacy rates in the world:
only 20% of its people can read. Hope for Humanity
is committed to the development of the future leaders
of southern Sudan through providing educational opportunities.
As part of the 2005 peace agreement that ended Sudan’s long civil war,
the Khartoum government promised that the people of the South would
have an opportunity to vote on their independence in 2011. That’s an
exciting prospect, but there could be trouble ahead. As the clock ticks
toward the deadline, no one will be surprised if the government cracks
down on outside influences, including organizations like Samaritan’s
Purse. SP is accelerating the work to reconstruct every church building
that was destroyed during the war. As God provides, teams hope to
build 80 churches this year and 200 each year after. There
are at least 1,000 churches that need to be rebuilt. SP hires
local Sudanese workers for the construction and have deployed dozens of
Christian men and women from the United States and Canada to train
these workers. Working in a land that lacks paved roads, electricity,
and construction facilities, every day is a challenge. Every church
rebuilt is worth it, though, as believers are encouraged and people are
coming to Christ.
